Karachi: At least seven people, including women and children, were killed and 30 others injured when an “overwhelming” bus overturned near Karachi’s Mauripur area on Sunday.
The bus overturned after colliding with a tow truck near Mauripur Truck Adda, rescue officials said. They said four children and three women were among the dead, while six to seven injured were in critical condition.
Police said the accident occurred when the victim’s vehicle sped while they were on a picnic.
The bodies and the injured have been shifted to Civil Hospital Karachi for medico-legal clearance and treatment respectively, rescue officials said. The body was later shifted to Sohrab Goth Mortuary.
The deceased were identified as Sugra, 40, Saadia, 45, an unidentified 40-year-old woman, Sakina, 6, Zeenat, 4, Kinza, 10, and Abdul Kader, 14. People told Geo News that all the dead were alive. They are from Bhangoria Goth area of Azizabad and they belong to the same family.
Police responded to the trailer and bus involved in the crash. Police said the tow truck driver was absconding and their team conducted a raid to nab him.
Authorities have asked the Karachi Commissioner and the police for details.
Mohammad Bashir, a relative of the dead, said 40 to 45 people were picnicking in the car that crashed. Sindh Chief Minister Mirat Ali asked Shah to treat the injured in a private hospital.
“Some of them were seriously injured, so the Sindh chief minister had to order them to be transferred to a private hospital.” Bashir also demanded an investigation into the incident to bring the perpetrators to justice.
