Pakistan is working hard to eradicate polio, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Monday during a meeting with billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates.
The two met on the sidelines of a special meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Riyadh.
According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the Prime Minister thanked Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) co-chairman Gates for sending a “congratulatory letter” on his re-election.
“The prime minister has confirmed his desire to continue working with Gates, recalling the relationship he had during his previous tenure,” he said.
He thanked the IMF for its longstanding support for polio eradication in Pakistan and said that continuous efforts by all partners are needed to achieve the ultimate goal of a polio-free Pakistan.
Meanwhile, Gates recalled Punjab’s immunization and polio vaccination program under Shehbaz as prime minister and “emphasized improving those practices across the country” to make the immunization program a success.
He also acknowledged Pakistan’s efforts and said eradicating polio was essential to protect future generations from the crippling disease.
In addition to polio, both discussed ongoing work between Pakistan and the IMF in the areas of immunization, nutrition and financial inclusion.
Recalling Gates’ visit to Pakistan in February 2022, Prime Minister Shehbaz extended an invitation to visit Pakistan again at an appropriate time.
