New Tax Turns Landa Bazar Into a Luxury Market

2 Min Read

Traders at Landa Bazar have voiced strong concerns over the government’s recent decision to levy a Rs. 200 per kilogram tax on imported used clothing, saying the move has triggered a sharp increase in prices across local markets.

According to market sources, the tax has pushed up the prices of winter garments by Rs. 500 to Rs. 1,500, making it increasingly difficult for low and middle-income families to buy affordable warm clothing. Traders said that even before the new tax, imported used clothes were already selling at higher rates this year, but they had tried to keep them within reach of ordinary buyers.

They further explained that the new duty has raised their import expenses significantly, compelling them to invest more capital in each shipment. The overall container-level cost of imported goods has climbed so steeply that many items in Landa Bazar have now slipped beyond the reach of the average consumer.

Business representatives have appealed to the government to review and lower the newly imposed tax, stressing that such relief is urgently needed to help underprivileged citizens afford winter apparel as temperatures begin to drop.
