SWAT: Unidentified gunmen killed a Levies personnel guarding a polio vaccination team in Matta Tehsil of Swat district on Tuesday. The attack on the polio team occurred in the Arkot area on Byakand Road, Enzargay Dag, where health workers carried out the national anti-polio campaign.
Officials said Levies personnel Abdul Kabir, a resident of Matta, provided security while female polio workers administered drops to children inside a house. The assailants fired at him outside, and he embraced martyrdom on the spot. Fortunately, the female workers escaped unharmed.
After the assault, the gunmen fled the scene. Police and security forces began a search operation to track them down. They later moved the martyred constable’s body to a local hospital.
Deputy Commissioner Swat Saleem Jan Marwat condemned the attack, calling it a cowardly and inhuman act. He said, “Abdul Kabir sacrificed his life while performing a national duty. His sacrifice will always be remembered.” He added that protecting polio teams remains a top priority and vowed to bring those responsible to justice.
District Police Officer Muhammad Umar also denounced the incident, saying law enforcement agencies remain determined to arrest the culprits and protect health workers.
Official data shows that attacks on polio teams have increased this year. In 2025, more than 20 people — including policemen and health workers — have lost their lives, while over 50 suffered injuries in similar incidents across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. At least 16 new polio cases have also surfaced in the province this year.
The district administration reaffirmed that the vaccination campaign will continue without interruption. Officials said the effort is vital for ensuring a safe and polio-free future for children.
