ABBOTTABAD — Illegal soapstone mining in the Pind area of Lower Tanoval tehsil has triggered a humanitarian and environmental crisis. Hundreds of villagers now live in fear and distress. Explosives used to extract soapstone have damaged over 250 homes. Meanwhile, residents report severe mental anguish and growing panic.
The situation escalated when villagers met Deputy Commissioner Abbottabad, Captain (retd) Sarmad Saleem Akram. They also staged a protest outside the Press Club. Their demands included immediate intervention to halt mining operations and protect their fundamental rights.
Village Nazim Younis Khan Tanoli, speaking to the media with other elders, accused a local mine owner named Nazir of reckless blasting. He warned that continued explosions threaten human life and could cause a major tragedy at any moment.
Residents say heavy machinery has destroyed the village’s only passageway. As a result, the damage has isolated the community and disrupted daily life. In addition, natural springs in the area are drying up, creating a severe shortage of drinking water.
Women have raised concerns over privacy violations. Mining activity has compromised cultural norms tied to veil observance. Furthermore, the blocked passageway has made movement difficult and exposed households to unwanted visibility.
During their meeting with the Deputy Commissioner, the delegation urged authorities to stop illegal soapstone mining. They called for restoring safe access, preserving water sources, and protecting the dignity and safety of villagers.
Protesters warned they would expand demonstrations if officials ignored their demands. However, they also expressed frustration over the mine owner’s refusal to engage in dialogue or respond to repeated complaints.
Villagers have appealed to higher authorities for urgent legal action. Therefore, they want mining operations to follow safety regulations and respect community rights. The crisis in Lower Tanoval continues to deepen, with residents demanding accountability and relief.
