Swabi: The KP Child Protection Unit has been formally inaugurated in Swabi, marking a significant milestone in the province’s ongoing efforts to protect children’s rights and welfare. The initiative reflects the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government’s commitment to creating a safer, more supportive environment for children across the province.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony was performed by Syed Qasim Ali Shah, Provincial Minister for Social Welfare, SE & WE Department, while Jennifer Melton, UNICEF Country Head, and Mr. Radoslaw Rehak, Chief of UNICEF KP, were also present. The event drew participation from government officials, social workers, and representatives of various organizations working on child rights and protection.
Held at the Ali Haqqani Public Library Auditorium, the inauguration featured detailed presentations highlighting the objectives and performance of the Swabi Child Protection Unit.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Syed Qasim Ali Shah said the launch of the KP Child Protection Unit in Swabi represents “a proud moment” for both the district and the government. He reaffirmed the provincial government’s full support and announced several new projects for underprivileged children, including access to healthcare, education, and monthly stipends to ease the financial burden on vulnerable families.
UNICEF officials praised the provincial government for prioritizing child safety and pledged continued support to ensure the success of child protection units across the province. They commended the government’s focus on preventing violence, abuse, and exploitation while improving access to education and healthcare.
Ijaz Muhammad Khan, Additional Chief of the KP Child Protection & Welfare Commission, noted that the Child Protection Unit Swabi had been operational for two years but was formally inaugurated now — a moment of great satisfaction. He explained that the unit will operate under a unified policy to support children facing violence, neglect, or harmful practices and to prevent child abuse and forced labor.
Sohail Ahmed, Chief Protection Officer KP at UNICEF, emphasized that “child protection begins at home” and requires collaboration among all institutions. He congratulated the stakeholders and expressed confidence that the Swabi unit will play a pivotal role in addressing children’s issues at the local level.
The ceremony concluded with remarks from representatives of the district administration, political leaders, and health and education experts, all of whom expressed their commitment to supporting child protection initiatives in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
