NADRA death registration has surged sixfold after the Federal Interior Minister directed the authority to implement sweeping reforms. These changes aim to improve civil registration and enhance the accuracy of Pakistan’s national data systems.
Despite the progress, NADRA reports that many citizens still delay registering the deaths of family members. In such cases, the deceased’s CNIC remains active, which causes legal complications in inheritance, pension claims, and property transfers.
To resolve these issues, NADRA introduced several key reforms. The authority removed the fee for CNIC cancellation due to death, improved data sharing with the Provincial Civil Registration Management System (CRMS), and made biometric verification mandatory. These steps now prevent fake or incorrect death entries more effectively.
When CRMS records a death, NADRA updates its family record database automatically. However, relatives must complete biometric verification before the system cancels the CNIC. This safeguard helps block fraudulent entries, especially since provincial systems currently lack biometric tools.
Although the transition created some initial inconvenience, NADRA confirms that data accuracy has improved and fake registrations have dropped significantly. Therefore, the reforms mark a major success in strengthening national identity management.
To make the process easier, citizens can now apply for CNIC cancellation using the Pak ID mobile app. In addition, a pilot project in three Punjab districts allows direct death registration through the app. Nationwide rollout of services for birth, marriage, divorce, and death registration is expected soon.
NADRA also added a free feature to the Pak ID app that lets users view family records and report discrepancies. The authority continues to work with provincial governments to integrate systems under the National Registration and Biometrics Policy. This initiative promotes transparency, coordination, and secure data handling.
NADRA urges all citizens to register key life events promptly in CRMS and keep family records updated. Timely NADRA death registration ensures continued access to government services and supports national data integrity.
