Peshawar: At the Pakistan Business Summit, Acting President and Senate Chairman Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani highlighted Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s business and investment potential. Moreover, he welcomed the Pakistan Business Summit as a platform to explore ways of boosting Pakistan’s economic growth. The event also gives investors a chance to engage with the government and local enterprises.
According to Mr. Gilani, Pakistan’s economy is gradually moving towards stability. In addition, both local and international investors are showing confidence due to the government’s efforts to ensure a secure business environment.
He emphasised that Pakistan’s young population, nearly 60 percent of the country, is its greatest asset. Therefore, empowering the youth and helping them realise their potential is key to a prosperous future. Furthermore, during his tenure as Minister for Tourism, Mr. Gilani established the Malam Jabba chairlift to promote tourism.
Regarding Pakistan’s fight against terrorism and extremism, he said firm action became necessary when dialogue failed. “When we stood against terrorism, the world supported Pakistan,” he added. Similarly, over 2.5 million internally displaced persons were successfully rehabilitated within 90 days, in collaboration with the international community.
Sharing personal hardships, Mr. Gilani spoke about his son’s abduction by terrorists. Nevertheless, he emphasised his commitment to peace, progress, and international cooperation. For instance, he recalled presenting a national peace award to young Malala Yousufzai for her courage and commitment to education.
Concerning regional relations, he described Pakistan and Afghanistan as “twin brothers” bound by faith, culture, and history. He also expressed hope that Afghan soil will never be used against Pakistan. Additionally, he reaffirmed the country’s commitment to constructive ties with neighbors, including China, Russia, and Iran.
Reflecting on Pakistan’s pursuit of peace and dialogue, he mentioned the offer to resume talks after the Mumbai attacks. Consequently, the goal was to resolve issues including Kashmir, Siachen, and terrorism.
In conclusion, Mr. Gilani urged unity, learning from past mistakes, and building a future based on peace, stability, and progress. He expressed confidence that public-private sector cooperation, combined with regional peace, would strengthen Pakistan’s economy. Indeed, summits like the Pakistan Business Summit help create long-term prosperity for the people.
