Global Workers’ Union Reviews Labor Conditions at Tarbela Dam

Tarbela Ghazi (Abid Ali Khan)– A high-level delegation from the Global Workers’ Union visited to assess Tarbela Dam labor issues and meet with stakeholders involved in the T-5 extension project. Director General Ms. Liniao Kusterm and Regional Head Pacific Mr. Apoli Nartokentino led the delegation. During their visit, they held discussions with labor representatives, project authorities, and company management.

The visit aimed to gain firsthand insight into the challenges faced by workers in Pakistan’s energy infrastructure. Delegates reviewed working conditions, safety concerns, and grievance mechanisms. In recognition of their visit, Awami Labour Union hosted a dignified reception at Naz Hotel, Pehai. General Secretary Aslam Adil welcomed the visitors and coordinated the event.

A large number of T-5 workers attended the gathering. Additionally, GM & PD T-5 Umair Manan, WAPDA officials, Chinese company representatives, labor leaders, and local media participated. The ceremony offered a platform for open dialogue and collective problem-solving.

In his address, Aslam Adil highlighted several Tarbela Dam labor issues, especially those affecting workers employed by Chinese contractors. He called for immediate reforms to ensure safer and fairer working conditions. Moreover, GM & PD Umair Manan echoed these concerns. He emphasized that the T-5 extension is crucial to Pakistan’s energy future. He added that the GRC Committee is actively working to resolve grievances.

Meanwhile, United Workers Federation leaders Muhammad Iqbal and Razam Khan praised Aslam Adil’s dedication to labor welfare. They also commended the joint efforts of management and union representatives. Furthermore, both urged stakeholders to prioritize worker safety and dignity.

Foreign delegates expressed solidarity with Pakistani workers. They pledged international support to protect labor rights. In addition, they acknowledged the role of the Awami Labour Union and stressed that resolving Tarbela Dam labor issues is vital for the success of Pakistan-China joint ventures.

The event concluded with a luncheon in honor of the distinguished guests and participants. Ultimately, it reinforced the spirit of collaboration and mutual respect.
