ISLAMABAD: Talks are currently underway to finalize the schedule for the Pakistan-Russia freight train, which will carry 16 containers of rice in its pilot run. This landmark initiative marks Pakistan’s first direct rail shipment to Russia.

Launched under the 9th Intergovernmental Commission (IGC), the project aims to connect Karachi Port with Moscow through Iran, Turkmenistan, and Kazakhstan. The corridor will span over 7,000 kilometers.

Earlier this year, Pakistan Railways and Russian Railways (RZD) signed a formal agreement in May 2025. This contract laid the groundwork for the new overland route. Although officials prepared the rice containers for dispatch in June, regional tensions delayed the departure. Therefore, negotiators are now working to confirm a revised launch date.

Importantly, the Pakistan-Russia freight train is expected to reach Moscow in 20 to 25 days. Each container will cost around USD 5,600 to transport. Compared to sea freight, this route offers faster delivery and lower costs.

Moreover, the service will open new markets for Pakistani agricultural exports. It also strengthens Pakistan’s trade footprint in Russia and Central Asia. Officials see the pilot train as a gateway to regular overland trade.

Currently, sea shipments take 35 to 45 days. In contrast, the new corridor will cut delivery time nearly in half. This efficiency will make Pakistani goods more competitive in regional markets.

The project reflects growing economic cooperation between Pakistan and Russia. Additionally, it supports regional connectivity through Central Asia. Stakeholders hope the pilot train will pave the way for expanded trade in textiles, pharmaceuticals, and other sectors. Furthermore, both countries have expressed interest in deepening bilateral ties through joint ventures, energy collaboration, and technology exchange. In addition, cultural exchanges, academic partnerships, and tourism initiatives are being explored to strengthen people-to-people connections and foster long-term diplomatic goodwill. As trade routes diversify, the Pakistan-Russia freight train could become a strategic pillar of long-term business engagement, fostering mutual growth and regional stability.
