Quito: Security forces stormed the Mexican embassy in Quito on Saturday to arrest former vice president George Glass, who was granted political asylum there, Ecuador dishonored.
A team of special forces surrounded the embassy and battering ram and at least one scale wall in an unprecedented raid on a diplomatic building considered a sovereign protected area.
The incident prompted Mexico to quickly cut diplomatic ties with Ecuador on Friday evening.
“This is a violation of international law and the sovereignty of Mexico,” said President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador in X.
Nicaragua has since been condemned by governments across the political spectrum, including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Cuba, Bolivia and Venezuela.
Lopez Obrador said authorities had moved “with force” to arrest Glass, who was accused of corruption and was in the embassy before being granted asylum on Friday.
He said he would appeal against Ecuador to the International Court of Justice.
The Vienna Convention, a treaty that regulates international relations, states that a country cannot enter its embassy in its own territory.
