Ethiopia, Pakistan Agree on Further Strengthening Institutional Linkages

ISLAMABAD – Ethiopia Pakistan diplomatic ties are entering a new phase of strategic cooperation. Both countries have agreed to strengthen institutional linkages and expand engagement across key sectors.

This development followed a meeting between H.E. Dr. Jemal Beker Abdula, Special Envoy and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ethiopia to Pakistan, and H.E. Ambassador Hamid Asghar Khan, Additional Secretary (Africa) at Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the meeting, both sides reviewed bilateral and multilateral cooperation. Key areas included peace and security, climate change, aviation, trade, investment, science and technology, culture, and tourism.

Ambassador Dr. Jemal Beker expressed satisfaction with the growing ties. He reaffirmed his commitment to work closely with the Government of Pakistan. In addition, he emphasized the need to build stronger institutional linkages to elevate the relationship.

He also briefed the Additional Secretary on the inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. According to him, the dam was built under the principle of equitable and reasonable water resource utilization.

Moreover, he highlighted Ethiopia’s leadership in regional integration. The country is advancing the climate agenda and sharing its resources with neighboring nations and beyond.

The Additional Secretary appreciated Ethiopia’s efforts to promote regional cooperation. He acknowledged its role in sharing resources with surrounding countries.

Ambassador Hamid Asghar Khan stressed the importance of economic diplomacy. He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to its “Look Africa” and “Engage Africa” policies. He also shared details about the upcoming 5th Pakistan-Africa Trade Development Conference & Single Country Exhibition (PATDC & SCE), scheduled for October 16–18, 2025, in Addis Ababa.

Historically, Ethiopia Pakistan diplomatic ties have been rooted in mutual respect and shared interests. Both countries have supported each other in multilateral forums and gradually expanded cooperation in trade, education, and diplomacy. The recent momentum reflects a renewed commitment to deepen Ethiopia Pakistan diplomatic ties and explore new avenues for strategic partnership.
