KARACHI: A major Thar mining milestone was reached as Jaffer Brothers (Pvt.) Limited (JBL), Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC), and Komatsu Limited celebrated the deployment of over 100 Komatsu machines at the Thar Coalfield Block II project. This achievement not only highlights the scale of operations but also reflects the strength of their long-term partnership.
During a ceremony in Karachi, the three organizations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalize future cooperation. As part of Pakistan’s energy strategy, the Thar Coalfield Block II project plays a vital role in reducing reliance on imported fuel. It also taps into indigenous coal reserves to support national energy independence.
So far, the initiative has created thousands of jobs and boosted industrial activity. Moreover, it contributes directly to Pakistan’s energy self-sufficiency goals. In addition to economic impact, the collaboration emphasizes sustainability through community uplift, environmental care, and skill development for Thar residents.
Speaking at the event, Farid Haroon Jaffer, CEO of Jaffer Brothers, said, “Through this partnership, we harness Pakistan’s own resources to power its future. Together with Komatsu and SECMC, we’re proud to build a stronger, energy-secure Pakistan.”
Similarly, Amir Iqbal, CEO of SECMC, added, “Our partnership with JBL and Komatsu reflects our commitment to energize Pakistan’s future. We share values of inclusive development, safety, and quality. Together, we aim to create lasting impact for Thar communities.”
Meanwhile, Tomomitsu Hoga, Managing Director of Komatsu Middle East FZE, remarked, “Deploying over 100 Komatsu machines at Thar Coalfield Block II is a proud moment. It shows the trust our partners place in Komatsu’s technology and the support provided by Jaffer Brothers. We remain committed to Pakistan’s energy journey.”
Currently, SECMC leads the development and operation of Block II. Jaffer Brothers, Komatsu’s authorized distributor in Pakistan since 1979, continues to provide product support and service excellence. Thanks to Komatsu’s advanced machinery, mining operations remain safe, efficient, and sustainable.
Ultimately, this Thar mining milestone strengthens Pakistan’s energy infrastructure. Furthermore, it sets a precedent for future public-private partnerships in the mining sector.
