Freshwater Boost for Fishermen and Ecosystem

THATTA: Experts, civil society members, politicians, and local fishermen have welcomed the ongoing rains and rising water flows at Kotri downstream. They believe the fresh spell is a blessing for the Indus Delta and the coastal belt of Sindh. Moreover, local fishermen expressed joy as the increased flow revived fish species in the Indus River, which flows under the historic Dulha Dariya Khan Bridge connecting Thatta and Sujawal.

Historian and writer Zahid Ishaque Soomro explained that freshwater penetration through the delta is a natural process. Furthermore, he emphasized that the renewed water flow is crucial for the survival of the Indus Delta and its fragile ecosystem.

Warning on Delta Degradation

Agronomist and water expert Obhaiyo Khan Khushik highlighted the damage caused by reduced water supply in past decades. He noted that the sea has swallowed large areas of fertile land because of poor flow from Kotri downstream. Consequently, water scarcity and irregular supply have pushed the once lush deltaic region to the brink of collapse.

Political Leaders Stress Safety Measures

PPP MPA Syed Riaz Hussain Shah Sherazi, the focal person for flood emergencies, said the Indus water is enriching its vast riverbed as it moves toward the sea. In addition, he assured that there is no serious flood threat to Thatta and Sujawal. Preventive steps, therefore, have already been taken to tackle any possible emergency.

Administration Ensures Preparedness

Deputy Commissioner Sujawal Zahid Hussain Rind expressed satisfaction with the district’s readiness. He informed that residents near the Surgari and Monarki protective dykes have already been advised to relocate to safer areas. Thus, the administration is confident it can minimize risk, in line with Sindh Government directives.
