LAHORE (Dunya News): Torrential rains and overflowing rivers have unleashed devastating floods across Punjab, submerging thousands of villages and destroying millions of acres of crops. Urban flooding in Gujrat has further paralyzed daily life.

According to officials, nearly 4,000 villages and more than 3.5 million people have been affected by the flooding in the Ravi, Sutlej, and Chenab rivers. The destruction of crops has resulted in losses worth millions of rupees.

The Punjab Flood Forecasting Division reported extremely high flood levels at Head Sidhnai and Ganda Singh Wala on the Sutlej, and at Head Khanki, Head Qadirabad, and Chiniot Bridge on the Chenab. High floods have also been recorded at Head Marala, Shahdara, Balloki, and Head Sulemanki. Several smaller tributaries, including Nullah Aik and Nullah Palku, are also overflowing.

A particularly dangerous situation has emerged at the confluence of the Ravi and Chenab rivers near Khanewal, posing a double threat to Multan and Muzaffargarh districts. At Head Muhammad Wala and Sher Shah, water levels have reached 412 feet—just five feet below the danger mark. Authorities have declared the next 12 hours “extremely critical” due to growing pressure at erosion points.

In Kasur’s Ganda Singh Wala, the Sutlej’s flow surged to 319,000 cusecs, engulfing more than 100 villages, including Noori Wala, Bhedian, and Usman Wala. Around 132 villages and 18,000 acres of land were submerged, with crops, homes, and even a government elementary school swept away.

In Luddan, breaches in protective bunds inundated settlements, while in Kabirwala, floodwaters from the Ravi broke through makeshift embankments and entered villages such as Kund Sargana, Qatalpur, and Barbegi, submerging homes and fields.

Officials warn that with water inflows continuing to rise, the flood situation across Punjab remains highly volatile.
