2,000-Year-Old Marble Statue Discovered in a Garbage Bag

In a surprising incident, a 2,000-year-old marble statue was found in a garbage bag in Thessaloniki, Greece.

The ancient statue, depicting a woman, was missing its head and measured 31 inches in height. The person who discovered it promptly handed it over to local authorities, who consulted archaeologists to analyze the artifact.

According to an initial police statement, the statue is believed to belong to the Hellenistic period, dating back to 320–30 BCE. It has been sent to archaeological experts for further examination before being returned to the authorities.

Investigations are underway to determine who discarded the statue. While one suspect was detained, they were later released.

Accidental discoveries of antiquities are not uncommon in Greece, a country rich in ancient heritage. Such finds often occur during construction or other activities.
