You need bulbs of saffron and can be planted till October. To plant saffron bulbs, take mix soil, vermicompost and sand in equal proportion. Fill the mixture in a pot or grow bag.

Bury the saffron bulbs in the soil and make sure that the top part of the bulb remains above the soil. Sprinkle water and place the pot or bag in a semi-shaded place where it can get 3 to 4 hours of light sunlight in the morning. However, protect the saffron plant from strong sunlight.

Water it only when the soil feels dry. Saffron bulbs will start to sprout in about 10 to 12 days, and after 45 to 50 days they will start to flower. Saffron flowers are light purple in color, and have three orange or red spots inside them. These are called safflowers. Carefully break them, take them out, and dry them in the shade. You can use or sell them after they dry.
