KARACHI: Police in Karachi said on Friday that they have so far arrested 17 suspects after five people were killed and two others were critically injured in a shootout between members of the Bugti clan overnight.
Two groups, led by Fahad Ahmed Nawaz Bugti and Ali Haider Bugti, engaged in a gunfight near Khayaban-i-Nishat (DHA) Khayaban-i-Nishat’s former residence late on Thursday night.
The clash resulted in the killing of 50-year-old Fahad – the nephew of the slain Baloch chief Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti – while Ali Haider, also the maternal nephew of the Bugti chief, was injured.
Stating that four others were also killed, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South, Asad Raza, told Dawn.com that two people were injured, not three as reported earlier.
“Earlier today, police raided DHA and arrested 17 individuals belonging to the Bugti clan, including two militants,” DIG Raza said.
He added that the suspects belonged to two alleged rival gangs within the Bugti family.
“Eight persons were arrested shortly after the incident, while the remaining suspects were detained early Friday morning,” explained Raza.
He further said that two injured members of the Bugti family were taken to the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) for treatment, where a police guard was deployed as investigators treated the injured as suspects in the clash.
Giving more details about the incident, Raza said that a gunfight took place between two tribal groups at DHA Nishat Commercial Lane 10 in Darakhshan police station limits on Thursday at around 11.25 pm.
As a result, Fahad and 35-year-old Naseebullah Bugti died. Three people lost their lives from Ali Haider’s group – sons of Mir Ali Haider Bugti Meer Mohsin Bugti and Mir Essa Bugti and also their gunner Ali.
Meanwhile, Ali Haider and his group mate Qaim Ali Qadir sustained injuries. Both were taken directly to AKUH for treatment, Police Surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed said.
According to a police surgeon, the post-mortem of two bodies was conducted at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center while the post-mortem of three other bodies was conducted at the Civil Hospital Karachi.
“They all suffered multiple gunshot wounds,” Dr. Syed said.
