Pakistan’s first locally produced four-wheeled electric vehicle (EV) is set to debut in December, following a recent meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif on EV adoption.
Since 2022, the government has issued 49 licenses for local production of two- and three-wheeled EVs, with 25 factories now operational. The first license for four-wheeled EVs was issued in September 2024.
Dewan Farooque Motors Limited (DFML) has begun EV production at its plant, and Chinese EV giant BYD has also entered the Pakistani market. PM Sharif emphasized the importance of finalizing the EV policy by November, improving licensing regulations, and developing a financial model for EVs.
Plans include distributing E-motor bikes to top students and electrifying public transport in Islamabad.
