Even though India says it has fixed problems in the area of Kashmir by changing laws since August 2019, new acts of violence done to people from its security forces show things are not as good. The killing of three men from Kashmir, believed to be done by the Indian army, has drawn focus on the violence that is supported by governments against Kashmiris. Even though Indian officials tried to calm the area, these happenings show that there are still problems. The deaths happened after a surprise attack on Indian soldiers by the fighters. This led to the loss of at least four security workers’ lives. After that, eight regular people were held for questioning in the Poonch area. After a week, the relatives of three prisoners were told to get their bodies because they said that Indian police had hurt them badly. A scary video shared on social media shows Indian soldiers using hot pepper powder on the open skin parts of prisoners. The Indian army says they are still looking into it. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh went to occupied Kashmir and promised families of the victims he would give them justice.

Sadly, fairness has been far away for the people of Kashmir since partition. Their wishes haven’t mattered and India wants to keep its wrongful control of a disputed place by changing things on there. The Indian Supreme Court recently supported the BJP government’s controversial decision to cancel Kashmir’s limited freedom. This helps those in New Delhi who want to rule over Kashmir like they just won a war and took control of it. Different global groups that focus on human rights often point out the use of torture and violence by Indian forces in this area. Unfortunately, the Indian government often uses ‘fighting against terrorism’ as an easy way to take away rights from people in Kashmir and hurt them badly. The question arises: How many more people in Kashmir have to suffer torture and lose their lives before the world accepts that we need India held responsible for its cruel actions in areas it controls? Instead of talking and working with Pakistan and the people in Kashmir to find a calm solution, India keeps showing its power. It uses too much force to keep down those who want freedom in Kashmir.
