ISLAMABAD: Adviser to Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah has said that the Supreme Court verdict on reserved seats should be reviewed.
Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, the PML-N leader said that court verdicts that create ambiguity are not in the interest of the country.
The Supreme Court on Friday quashed the verdict of the Peshawar High Court depriving the PTI of seats reserved for non-Muslim candidates in the assemblies.
“The Supreme Court’s verdict is tantamount to rewriting the constitution,” said Rana Sanaullah.
He added that the government has great respect for the Supreme Court, but this verdict does not meet the basic criteria of the Constitution and should therefore be reviewed.
Rana Sanaullah was of the view that the Election Commission of Pakistan had rejected the Sunni Ittehad Council’s (SIC) request for allotment of reserved seats. SIC approached the Peshawar High Court and their application was again rejected, he added.
An aide to the Prime Minister said that the independent candidates were declared PTI members despite taking an oath to be independent.
“Judges have taken an oath to protect the constitution,” Rana Sanaullah said, urging the judiciary to review the verdict.
