Karachi: Veteran trade unionist Karamat Ali died in Karachi on Thursday morning after a prolonged illness, his son Abbas Haidar confirmed to Dawn.com.
Ali is being treated at a private hospital in Karachi, according to Haider, joint director of the Pakistan Institute of Labor Education and Research (PIL).
Funeral prayers will be offered today at 7 pm at Shuhada-i-Karbala Imambargah in Ancholi area of Karachi and he will be buried at Wadi-i-Hussain graveyard.
At the age of 78, Ali was one of the founding members of Peeler and served as its chief executive.
According to Peeler’s website, Ali is also a founding member of several local and regional organizations, including the Pakistan Peace Coalition, the Pakistan-India People’s Forum for Peace and Democracy, and the South Asian Labor Forum.
Karachi Literature Festival (KLF) website Alyny, the author of Raahguzar Tau Dekho, played an important role in the labor movement of the 1970s.
